"To the final Score"

Marvel's Spider-man Remastered is a story-based action game by Insomniac Games. It was released in August 12, 2022 following the success of the original 2018 game. With the game being a remastered version, is Marvel Spider-Man game worth the purchase or is it just another cash grab?

Story Exposition:

Marvel's Spider-Man story begins with Peter Parker preparing for a battle that has the potential to transform New York City for the good - a raid on Fisk Tower. Here we see a seasoned Spider-Man defeating one of New York City's underground crime lords, Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin. After defeating the formidable boss, Wilson Fisk cautions Spider-Man that the city will inevitably spiral into chaos in his absence. In the days following his arrest, criminal gangs attempt to seize power in the vacuum created and within the city's chaos, Peter's courage and quick actions are put to the test with battles, investigations and petty crimes that hinder his progress.

First impression: Game Play

When you first take control of Spider-Man you start by learning how to swing through the city before receiving a brief combat tutorial. The combat mechanics is pretty straight forward, it features simple inputs for executing combos and a selection wheel for utilizing various Spidey Gadgets to enhance combat effectiveness. The enemy AI is also simple with basics attacks for mobs and heavier attacks for elites. While the game may seem straightforward at first, the real challenge is trying to end the battles as quickly as you can to avoid being overwhelmed by enemy mobs.

The game scatters side quests and activities across Manhattan, showcasing the city and the Marvel world. While combating crime and other activities, you'll observe that the city is bustling with life, filled with people, cars, and everyday happenings. As the story unfolds, you see the cityscape transform with an increase in crime and the rise of mobs, instilling in you a growing sense of urgency to rescue the city and restore order.

Spinning the web: Pros and Cons

The game does an excellent job of immersing you in the role of a superhero. By accumulating "Focus," you can perform special one-hit takedowns on enemies. The number of enemies never becomes overwhelming, and the variety of gadgets available allows players to defeat foes in multiple ways. The storyline is engaging, portraying the challenges of leading a double life. Players are encouraged to employ stealth to reduce the number of enemies in specific areas, a mechanic also utilized in time-trial side missions where you can strive to beat your best scores. The game offers numerous enjoyable and easily discoverable collectibles, each providing unique insights into the experiences of Peter Parker and Spider-Man.

Although the game succeeds in immersing you in a heroic role, it does have some drawbacks. Dealing with most mobs is relatively simple, with only specific elites proving to be troublesome. Your ability to stealthily take down enemies is restricted to approaching them from behind, on posts, ledges, or beams, as you cannot stealth while sticking to walls or ceilings. Certain story missions deviate from the immersive experience of embodying Peter Parker/Spider-Man, feeling disconnected from the game's core gameplay.

The Final Score: 4.4 out of 5

Rating Score Card and Importance Value

In general, the game is enjoyable and offers a variety of activities that allow players to embody the incredible Spider-Man. The side quests not only showcase Peter Parker's heroic side but also his scientific prowess. Many side quests are score-based, encouraging players to continue playing in an attempt to surpass their own scores, enhancing the replay value of the game. Combat in the game is entertaining as players can utilize almost any surface to immobilize enemies, including walls, ceilings, floors, and lamp posts. The narrative is distinctive and contributes to expanding the Spider-Man universe without feeling like a typical MCU story. Additionally, the inclusion of various unique costumes adds depth to the experience, bringing different versions of Spider-Man to life.

However, there are some issues with certain quests that cut out Peter/Spider-Man, disrupting the immersion. Moreover, the villains in the game aren't fully utilized and are primarily used for advancing the story. Despite this, the villains' personalities shine through and battling them is enjoyable. In conclusion, this game is a valuable addition to any collection and offers a replayable experience without becoming monotonous or dull.
